AUTHOR / PUBLISHER AGREEMENT 
Once we have the signed publishing agreement, completed worksheet, final manuscript and retainer, we will proceed with publishing your book. We will likely provide you with some conceptual ideas if there are parts of your story needing further development but basically, we trust our authors to write what they know. Our goal is to present your story to the world, in your voice, as you imagined it, but we will also not embarrass you or ourselves by putting work out there not up to our standards. Most works require strict editing, proofreading, and story tweaks, etc. The editor-in-chief makes recommendations to the publisher who has the final word on all work published by TKG.


DIVAS
We will not work with or sign high maintenance or difficult authors. A creative difference is acceptable, not a clash of personalities. We do not work for you! As publisher, we have the final word. We do have your best interests at heart. As well as our own. We discern pretty quickly what type of client you will become based on the person you are. 

If you are officially classified as "High Maintenance" after we have signed you, we will limit our interaction greatly. This will not come as a surprise to you. We will always entertain contractual buy-out offers and if accepted by us, release you from further obligations. While divas are rare, both genders, it does happen--and we manage them quite nicely. Don't be a Diva...

ROUGH POTENTIAL
(TKG) accepts only a limited number of authors per year for our imprints. We do not publish all authors who seek us out. We must accept only the very best to represent. Offering our publishing services to everyone makes us less effective and woefully inefficient. If we see “rough potential” we will take a closer look. We might also, on occasion, rarely, provide our publishing preparations services without literary representation or imprint.

FREE COPIES
We do not provide you with FREE COPIES of your published book beyond the proof copy. When you are ready to build your inventory, simply contact us how many copies you need and we'll get you a price. You will need to prepay. TKG accepts most credit cards, checks, Money Orders and yes, even cash. Books are Print on Demand (POD). 


ECHELON  REFUND  POLICY
You earn 100% of your royalties based on combined worldwide sales from all formats until your platform fees are fully recovered. At this point, we are considered in equilibrium and only then will TKG begin sharing in royalties based on our predetermined publishing agreement.


EXPANDED DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL (EDC)

The Expanded Distribution Channel offers tens of thousands more locations including libraries, book re-sellers and retailers. Though we oftentimes advise against  using the EDC as these book sellers will compete with you directly, head to head, and will always undercut your Amazon retail price. Your royalty with the EDC is also significantly lower (usually 10x) and your retail price is significantly higher (so there is enough margin for them to take their cut.) You will be advised as we construct your book determining what the manufacturing costs will be and what your retail price/royalties will be if you chose the EDC.  We always lookout for you.


AUDIO BOOKS
Audio Books are available at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon and more than ten global partners.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

We will provide you with a submission form to include with a copy of your book, which you will mail to the Library of Congress & US Copyright Office for the required Depository Submissions. 

ROYALTIES
It is likely you will sell zero books. It is unlikely you will sell one million books. (There, did we cover ourselves sufficiently?) That said, royalties are rooted in very specific criteria (e.g., page count, b/w or color) trim size, retail pricing, oh, and SALES!  We always try to maximize your royalty share during construction. Every page adds one more layer of printing/shipping costs. Unlike mainstream publishing houses, we offer our authors the lion's share of royalties. That's just how we roll.


DISBURSEMENTS
Sales reporting with royalty disbursement is made annually. Your account is actively monitored. If there is an uptick in sales, a special disbursement will be made—a minimum account balance payout for any author, is set at $300. Otherwise, zeroing accounts & paying royalty balances will be made annually (e.g., January 2017).


MARKETING
Until you have been signed as a client, we don't reveal our marketing strategies.


SALES

Your timeframe for sales must be realistic. Calling us hourly won't help. Truth be told, we are equally as excited as you when we take a book "live." If your book isn't widely talked about, it could take some time to turn a profit, if ever. We do not create sensations overnight! It could actually take several years to gain a following or the attention of mainstream publishing houses or the public at large, if ever, if at all. 

As a small indie press, we must ask you to also promote your book. Social networking is the best way to grow a worldwide audience as this is where your tipping point can happen as quickly as overnight. 

Not only do we have your best interests in mind, it also serves us well to reach a high level of attention for our publishing list as our success is wedded to your success. We cannot however make people buy your book. We can only entice them to do so.As your publisher, depending on your platform, we ensure your books are available in roughly 110 countries as print-on-demand [POD] books & downloadable audiobooks and e-books in Kindle format [whenever & wherever possible – based on data size, reformatting, conversion software & country/language translations or industry standard applications with pricing and royalties in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling, Euros, Rupees, etc.]


Your book may be available on Barnes & Noble if cost effective (royalty wise) and the publisher will advise you on this prior to publishing; Amazon (United States, Europe, Japan, India, etc.), as well as tens of thousands of libraries, bookstores and retail locations around the world, including Apple iTunes store.

 Can you really afford not to be heard?


AUTHOR PURCHASED INVENTORY (API)

Authors enjoy having a supply of their own books on hand. We supply those copies to you. When you buy your own book from us, this does not earn you or us a royalty. Authors keep all monies from (API) sales however. Generally speaking, figure your Author Purchased Inventory (API) cost per book to be about 50% off the retail cover price plus S&H. (Associated manufacturing costs  for your book depends on the page count which factors into freight weight as does the trim size, color or b/w, and so forth.) Estimate 'freight' at 50 cents per book.


You may order as many (or as few) copies of your book as often as you like to begin your shameless, self-promotion campaigns at markets/ festivals; artisan fairs; sidewalk events; county fairs, curbside appeals and even door-to-door 'knock-abouts', etc.  (And don’t forget to give copies to everyone in your family and everyone you’ve ever known, since third grade!) Word-of-mouth is of paramount importance here. Your book is your calling card. When you give a free book, get a promise for a review at some point on Goodreads, Amazon, etc.

Once your book is in the final stages, page count, established retail price, etc., we will have the exact API pricing ready for you. You can pre-order copies. (Prepaid). You really will want to establish your own inventory for book signings, courtesy giveaways, gifts, events, etc. Allow 3-5 weeks for delivery. Pressmen do not like it when they are rushed and will likely spit on your pages. So plan wisely.


PRINT ON DEMAND (POD)
All books are print on demand. (This is highly efficient. To do otherwise is cost prohibitive.) Print on Demand is what allows you to publish and compete in today's environment. Your book is printed as a trade paperback not hardbound and shipped only after it is ordered and paid for by the customer. That’s efficient! 

Retail orders are fulfilled by the seller, namely, the bookstore or online presence. For example, when a customer orders your book on Amazon or Barnes and Noble, and pays for it, only then is your book printed and shipped to the customer.

This POD technology eliminates the need for warehousing stacks and stacks of unsold books. The costs associated with printing say 10,000 books and storing them is sort of outside the range of most authors and is certainly outside the range of indie publishers. With POD, you can order one (1) copy or 40,000+ depending on your needs. It's really smart.

We do not maintain inventory for authors.  


FOOTNOTES


​A. To sell your books through distribution outlets, bookstores & online retailers within the Expanded Distribution Channel, we must choose an industry standard trim size. (See Notes N, P) Additionally, books with cream paper must be of the following trim sizes:  5 x 8 / 5.25 x 8 / 5.5 x 8.5 / or 6 x 9. [Printing on spine must have 100 pages minimum.]

B. BISAC = Book Industry Standards and Communications. Used in the supply chain to categorize titles based on content. We will ensure the proper BISAC, Trim Size, etc. 

We will not bore you with our vast knowledge of gutter margins, front matter, pagination, bleeds, covers, interior and spine formatting, crop marks, open prepress interface (OPI), locked or encrypted PDFs, etc., because that would just be showing off.  

C. Paper Stock for b/w: White: 60# 444ppi. Cream: 60# 400ppi

D. Paper Stock for color: White: 60# 426ppi.  Cream: n/a

E. Cover Stock: 4-color w/film lamination. 10pt CIS

F. Perfect Binding; Professional Trade Paperback. 

G. Book Minimum: 24 pages. (See I below)

H. Books on Tape (Audio/CDs), hardcover, pop-up or paper doll books are not offered by TKG at this time.

I.  Page count limits: White paper: 24 to 828. Cream: 24 to 740 pages.
  
J. Print on Demand – Books printed only after purchased. (Benefits: Cost effective. No Spoilage. Inventory Freedom, no warehousing.) 

K. Printing: Highest Quality CYMK available with latest digital print technology.

L. “Look inside” feature is an Amazon online ribbon across your book's cover alerting customers to see random pages. A nice sales tool so customers can review your book before they buy it. Process takes about 3 weeks to be reflected after we take your book "live." 

M. If you notice Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, etc., putting your book “ON SALE” jump for joy! More people may buy it at the lower price but your royalty remains the same!!!  You’re welcome. Likewise, you may see where resellers are selling your book for 10x the listed retail price. Ignore it. There's nothing we or you can do about it.

 N. Trim Size Limits: Width:  4”   to    8.5”    (10.16cm to 21.59cm)

                                 Height:  6”   to  11.69”  (15.24cm to 29.6926cm)

(TKG) will decide the appropriate size of your book based on your preferences, industry standards and maximum royalty affected.

 O. Page count factors greatly on your royalty. As does trim size, paper color, etc. Much like constructing a house, materials add costs. 

 P. Custom Trim Sizes (6 x 8.25 / 8.25 x 8.25 / 8.5 x 8.5) Not eligible for EDC. (Barnes & Noble is in the Expanded Distribution Channel.)


Q. If writing a children’s book, you may wish to consider a companion coloring book of the same name, at the same time. (Separate ISBN, fees and discounts apply – Retainer Required.) Alert your illustrator with this in mind. If you include your coloring book at the end of the storybook, your costs increase. This makes your book's construction costs greater than it should be. If only one (1) page of your storybook is color, the entire book is "considered" color! Twice as expensive.

R.  Keep text size, line spacing, page placement & fonts in mind. Be sure you appeal to those who are actually reading your book. Grandparents, moms and dads and children must all be considered when writing a children’s book. (Biggest complaint is tiny print & odd fonts.) You want people to BUY IT, READ IT and TALK ABOUT IT, so others will buy it, read it and talk about it ... trust us to guide you.

 S. Your book will have its own online detail page. (380 words max - See V, X) This is a sales tool. Describe your book in a way to entice the reader to buy it.

T. Once we have formatted your book, assign your ISBN and Library of Congress pre-assigned control number, and have ordered your final proof copy, changes are not permitted. After your book is available for sale, as a FIRST EDITION, we can make minor changes and not affect the edition or assign a new ISBN. We can change your book’s online description, search engine keywords, BISAC category, etc. Any changes you ask us to make after your book is published will incur charges of $225 per hour. Please allow up to ten business days for any changes to update on the system. Subsequent editions require additional formatting & editing fees, a new ISBN, bar code and so on. 

U. We publish eBooks in Kindle format only.

V. Your book’s description (detail page) displays on all sales channels. Your description must follow Amazon’s code of conduct description guidelines. (See S above and X below.)

W. (TKG) reserves the right to amend/add/delete or void any part of this informational material as circumstances warrant. Worldwide sales will depend greatly on how well received your work is as it spreads throughout social media and word-of-mouth. 

X. (TKG) reserves the right to represent or decline any author. The publisher is the sole authority on what gets published and has the final word on all matters publishing and is inclusive of all editing, proofreading, story changes, improvements, enhancements, book construction, pricing, etc. The online inclusion (not the actual content of your book but the following information in online detail pages, descriptions, titles, bullet points, or images) is prohibited on Amazon.com:

•           Pornographic, obscene, or offensive content. 

•           Phone numbers, physical mail addresses, e-mail addresses, or website URLs. 

•           Availability, price, condition, alternative ordering information, (i.e., links to other websites for placing orders), or alternative shipping offers, (i.e., free shipping). 

•           Spoilers (information that reveals plot elements crucial to the suspense, mystery, or surprise ending of a story). 

•           Reviews, quotes, or testimonials. 

•           Solicitations for positive customer reviews. 

•           Advertisements, promotional material, watermarks on images, photos, or videos. 

•           Time-sensitive information (dates of promotional tours, seminars, lectures, etc.). 

Y. Thank you for taking the time, making the effort, to read this material thoroughly. There will not be a test. Writing is a lot of work. It's perfectly okay and quite natural to ask yourself ...why? Why did you take up writing instead of say, water colors or bowling or kayaking? We write not because we want to, we write because we "have" to. We dearly hope you do become a respected author at some  station in your life, giving notice to the world, of your voice.
